MINUTES OF THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

 

 

          Meeting Date: September 28, 2009                                                 Place: Papa's New Roost

 

Big Sir Ed Nissen opened the meeting at 7:57 AM.  Secretary Dan Mohn reported that a quorum was present (see attached attendance report).  The minutes of the August 31, 2009 BEC meeting were discussed and approved as corrected (Legg/Nelson). 

 

TREASURER'S REPORT:

Treasurer Rich Brandau reported a beginning balance of $4714.55 and an ending balance of $4328.03 for the month of September. The main expenses for the month were printing, supplies and postage - $158; Officers Expense - $222 (Big Sir Travel Expense to SIR Annual Meeting); Shirt and Hat purchase - $193; and, Answering Service - $8. The Treasurer’s Report was approved. (Legg/Nelson).

 

ATTENDANCE:

Attendance Chairman Herb Spierling reported that 12 Sirs have called that they would not be attending the luncheon meeting. Sir Bill Bamford reported that 5 guests would be attending. Sir Spierling reported that Sir George Brown is unable to attend the luncheon meetings until he can find a person to care for his wife during the time of the meeting.

 

MEMBERSHIP:

Membership Chairman Ralph Legg reported that Sir Jim Dearborn had passed away, and that Sir Vernon Moore resigned because he has moved from the area. Sir Legg further reported that Donald Walton will be inducted at Thursday’s Luncheon Meeting. Sir Joe Gill is Walton’s sponsor. The membership stands at 150 active and 5 inactive. Sir Legg announced that he was retiring as Membership Chairman at the end of the year; Sir Scott Gray has volunteered to take over the Chair.

 

STANDING COMMITTEE REPORTS:

 

LUNCHEON: Sir Henry Beltran reported that all is set for Thursday’s luncheon. Sir Beltran will request a setup for 120 plus the head table.

 

PROGRAM: Thursday’s program will be presented by Mike Albrecht from TuCARE.  The November program will be a presentation about Antarctic Wildlife by Roger Anderson of Modesto Junior College.

 

COMPUTER USERS GROUP:  Big Sir Ed Nissen, via email, requested approval for a CUG meeting on October 22, 2009, to be hosted by Sir Dick Chimenti, at a time and place to be determined. Approved (Nissen/Mohn).

 

WEB PAGE: No Report

 

GOLF: No Report

BULLETIN: Big Sir Nissen requested that all items for the October bulletin be submitted to Sir Stu Heller by Monday, October 5.

 

PUBLICITY: Sir Gil Wesson reported that both the Sierra Mountain Times and the Sonora Union Democrat published a notice of Thursday’s Luncheon Meeting. Sir Wesson complimented the Union Democrat for its article on the Sons in Retirement.

 

TRAVEL:  Little Sir Earl Nelson, Travel Chairman, reported that interest in the September 2010 trip to Eastern Canada remains high, and, space is still available.

 

RV: Sir Bob Becker reported that the August/September trip was great fun with 15 or more rigs joining for all or part of the trip. Sir Becker reported that the RV Club has reserved the Railtown 1897 State Historic Park for our SIR Picnic in August 2010, and that for the first time, a fee of $300 will be charged for the use of the facilities. Discussion ensued regarding whether this should be included in the ticket price or paid from the Branch SIR Treasury. This item will be further discussed next year. Sir Becker requested approval for the RV Christmas Dinner to be held on December 7th at the Peppery Gar and Brill in Sonora. Sir Becker noted that this dinner is attended by many retired RV members and widows of members. Approved (Nelson/Bamford).

 

THEATER: Sir Ralph Bushnell reported that the next play will be Little Women: The Musical at the East Sonora SRT, with dinner at the East Sonora Conference Center following the play. Sir Joe Gil is the host. The December play, hosted by Sir Bushnell, will be Christmas My Way: A Sinatra Holiday Bash at the Fallon House in Columbia with dinner following at the East Sonora Conference Center.

 

HIKING GROUP: Sir Jerry Jensen, by email, requested approval for a hike at Bell Meadows on October 15, car pooling from the Twain Harte Market Parking lot at 8:30 AM. If the weather is unfavorable an alternate date will be selected. Approved

 (Legg/Robinson). Big Sir Ed Nissen reported that Sir Bill Anning, who fell and suffered a broken wrist and a serious head laceration during the hike around Pinecrest Lake, was recovering satisfactorily at home. The Pinecrest Volunteer Fire Department did a great job with the rescue, using a special mountain gurney and a boat to transport Sir Anning to the ambulance for transport to the hospital. A big Thank You goes to Sir Jerry Jensen for having professional first aid supplies in his back pack and for performing first aid to stabilize Sir Anning until the Pinecrest Volunteer Fire Department could transport him to the ambulance. The BEC authorized reimbursement of up to $100 to Sir Jerry Jensen to replenish his first aid supplies. Approved (Robinson/Legg). Big Sir Ed Nissen asked Sir Dan Schroeder, who was on the hike with Sir Anning, to send a special letter of appreciation to the Pinecrest Volunteer Fire Department.

 

MOVIE: Sir Gil Wesson requested approval for a “Movie and Dinner”, on a date to be determined, at the East Sonora Regal Entertainment Theater. Approved (Robinson/Bamford).

 

FELLOWSHIP: Big Sir Ed Nissen reported that an appropriate card has been sent to Sir Jim Dearborn’s spouse.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

Big Sir Ed Nissen reported that the Christmas party invitations will be sent out in October. A flyer will be placed in the October bulletin. A Christmas Party organizational meeting will be held Thursday, after the luncheon. 

Because of the holiday season and other reservations at the Elk’s Lodge, the December general meeting will be on the first WEDNESDAY (December 2nd).

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Treasurer Rich Brandau reported that the Reminder for Volunteer Contributions will be included in the October Bulletin. Sir Ralph Legg reported that Rule 94 allows the branch to request a donation from inactive members to cover the cost of postage for the bulletin.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 8:45 AM.

 

The next Executive Committee Meeting will be 8:00 AM, Monday, November 2, 2009, at Papa’s New Roost with breakfast starting at 7:00 AM. The monthly luncheons are held on the first Thursday of each month at the Sonora Elks’ Lodge with the exception of December as noted above.
